About the surface level walkway

There are many reasons why the Bearpit would benefit from the introduction of the surface level walkway:

• It would create a safer route through the Bearpit at night.
• It would be a quicker route across the roundabout for cyclists and disabled people. The Bearpit is renowned for being inhospitable for cyclists.
• The higher level walkway would also mean the space is overlooked, which has been proven to reduce crime.
• It will allow the subways to be temporarily blocked off and enable organisers to profit from of large events.
• It will not reduce the amount of traffic through the Bearpit during the day as the subways will still be the quickest route from A to B.

In short, this project will provide a major boost to the overall regeneration of the space and its surroundings by attracting people, events, culture and commerce to the space. It aims to complement the work already undertaken by the Bearpit Improvement Group.
